Role purpose :
The IPM Lead will support the Agronomy Manager in the technical aspects of the agronomy program; scouting and interpretation of scouting data to develop appropriate prescriptions, evaluation of the efficacy from current inputs and procedures, and assistance with applied field research to evaluate new products and practices. The IPM Lead is responsible for the effective, environmentally conscious method of pest management, common-sense practices, planning, coordination and execution of all pesticide activities while maintaining compliance to Worker's Protection Standard, Stewardship and Regulatory programs. This position will train and supervise full time staff to provide efficient and effective field execution. The effectiveness of this position is measured by Nursery, Trait and Parent Seed groups meeting their timelines and returning target amounts of high quality seed, achieving across year reliability of seed increases and crosses and maintaining budget efficiency.
Accountabilities::
- Develop and implement appropriate scouting, documentation and recommended actions based on acquired information.
- Identifying tolerant thresholds before taking pest control action.
- Monitor and identify pests accurately, to make appropriate control decisions.
- Execution of proper control methods for effectiveness and risk.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of current practices and products, via scouting and data collection.
- Assist with the development and execution of applied field research trials to investigate efficacy and safety of new practices, products, techniques and technologies in the areas of Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
- Execute SOPs developed by Site Management Team. Aid in SOP implementation by IPM personnel. Assist with coordination and execution of agronomy group operations activities and SOP implementation.
- Develop and schedule pesticide applications to provide quality crop protection with minimal impact to environment.
- Provide communication across group functions to ensure health and safety,
- Provide accurate information for the Hawaii Good neighbor program
- Equipment calibration, maintenance and repair.
- Compliance to Federal and State laws regarding pesticides.
- Maintain inventories and accurate records, required by State and Federal law
- Regular updates and written progress reports, timelines and needs communicated as requested by managers.
- Continuous improvement through Quality Management
- Communicate and solve staffing needs (assembling proper crew for necessary activities).
- Develop and maintain productive working relationships with all Hawaii staff.
Knowledge, Skills &
Experience:
Critical knowledge::
- Current, comprehensive knowledge of pest life cycles, available pest control methods, pesticide chemistries.
- Manage pest damage by the most economical means, with the least possible hazard to people, property, and the environment.
- Field scouting methodology. Field diagnoses and troubleshooting, for pests, fertility, irrigation problems, etc.
- Good understanding of cultural practices (weed control, soil fertility practices, etc.).
- Knowledge of and ability to use computer hardware and software for data management, trial setup and analysis. E.g., ArcInfo, Excel, Access.
- General understanding of field and plot machinery utilization
- Adapt new technology designed for data collection and accuracy
- Thorough knowledge of the maize and soybean breeding processes and nursery management practices and requirements.
- Exposure to marker-assisted breeding and pollinating cycle.
- Knowledge of seed crop research, production and quality assurance practices.
- Understanding of pesticide modes of action, chemical compounds, active ingredients and formulations.
Critical experience :
- B.S. in agriculture or equivalent experience in tropical agricultural research preferred.
- Practiced in a series of pest management evaluations, decisions and controls, aware of the potential for pest infestations.
- Knowledge of farm operations and agronomy necessary.
- Ability to maintain/obtain a Private Applicator and Category 10 Licenses.
- The successful candidate will also demonstrate strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. Strong computer skills are necessary.
- The ability to function effectively as a team member and to perform detailed work is necessary.
- The ideal candidate will also be flexible, adaptable and safety-oriented.

- The Agronomy group is responsible for the often unique crop care needs of a large number of Hawaii, mainland and international stakeholders and therefore must be committed and responsive to customer needs.
